As a keen gardener living in a high, cold and exposed location, my efforts to grow vegetables are constantly challenged by the conditions. I have long wanted a tunnel but it had be the right one. Firstly it had to be robust enough to withstand the extreme conditions but it also had to be aesthetically pleasing. My timbertunnel is definitely both of these. It is well made from laminated local timber which has been fixed onto large ground screws. This baby isn’t going anywhere and we’ve already had some significant storms and high winds to test it since it was built. We’ve also had a really frosty November but not so in the tunnel. That has remained comfortably frost free.
The build took Ike and Al about 3 days. They were organised, efficient and tidy workers and the site was left immaculate with all waste disposed of. They worked really well as a team, both knowing what they had to do. They brought everything they needed with them.
Since the tunnel was installed in August, in addition to preparing the beds for next years growing season, I have been growing some carrots and salad crops which are definitely extending my growing season compared to normal already. I also had modest success with late crops of beans and peas. I love that no matter what the weather I’m able to potter in the tunnel and am really enjoying that space. I’m looking forward to getting going properly next year. For me, this is the gift that’s going to keep on giving – getting better and better.
My only regret…….I couldn’t have a bigger one (space didn’t allow).
